Sigiriya

The royal clash

Sigiriya is one of the most significant monuments of Sri Lanka. It is referred to as the eighth wonder of the world by the locals. The historic rock fortress is located on a massive rocky plateau about 200 meters above the treetops of the jungle. The Lion Rock (“Sigiriya”) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and served as a retreat for King Kassapa (473 Anno Domini), who murdered his stepfather in order to snatch the crown from him. Traces from this period can still be found in the surrounding ruins and gardens. A special eye-catcher is the ancient frescos of Sinhalese maidens performing various tasks while taking the stairs up the mountain to a height of 330 feet/100 meters. In addition to the historical background the view is particularly breathtaking and worth the climb. The great view over this landscape, as well as the detour to the imposing “Golden Temple” of Dumballa and to the cave temples is something you don’t want to miss out on.
